Why the advertised rate is not what you pay
A Texas retail plan is not a single per-kWh number. It is a base charge, an energy rate that can change at usage thresholds, bill credits that only apply if you cross a specific level, and your utility's delivery charges, which are the same no matter which retail provider you pick. Because of that structure, a plan that wins at 1,000 kWh a month can lose at 2,000 kWh, and a plan built around a credit at 1,000 kWh is worth nothing to a household that never gets there. Texas usage is also seasonal — summer air conditioning can double a month's consumption — so the plan that fits an annual average often does not fit any individual month. Comparing on your real twelve-month curve is what shows which plan has the lowest projected cost for the way your household actually uses power.
How the comparison works

- Connect your smart meter (optional). If your meter supports it, we authenticate with Smart Meter Texas under our own broker registration and pull your interval data with your one-time authorization, so the comparison runs on measured reads instead of typed estimates.
- We price every plan against your curve. Each plan's base charges, tiered rates, usage credits and delivery charges are applied month by month to your own usage, and the results are ordered by projected annual cost, lowest first.
- Check the plan and switch. Read the plan's Electricity Facts Label, cross-reference it on the PUCT's marketplace, and enroll with the provider directly.
How we are paid
No electricity provider pays us for the plan you choose — we make $0 on which plan you pick, and no provider can pay to move up the list. The ranking is purely projected annual cost. How is this different from Power to Choose?
Power to Choose lists rates at a fixed 1,000 kWh usage level. Texas usage is spiky — heavy air conditioning in summer, heating in winter — so the plan that looks lowest-cost at 1,000 kWh may not be the lowest-cost plan for your actual year. We apply each month's rate to your own usage for that month, including base charges, usage credits and tier thresholds.
Where does the plan data come from?
Plan data comes from the Power to Choose marketplace operated by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT), refreshed daily. Each plan links to its own Electricity Facts Label, which is the authoritative source for that plan's exact rates, fees and terms.
