Frequently Asked Questions
You enter your monthly electricity usage (in kWh) for each month of the year, along with your zip code. The calculator then compares your actual usage pattern against every available plan on PowerToChoose.org to estimate what each plan would cost you annually, rather than at a single 1,000 kWh average.
All plan data is sourced from PowerToChoose.org, which is maintained by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT). We fetch current plans and their rate structures to calculate your personalized costs. Plans are refreshed regularly to ensure accuracy.
PowerToChoose.org lists each plan's average price at three usage levels (500, 1,000, and 2,000 kWh). Your usage moves month to month, so the plan that looks lowest at 1,000 kWh may not be lowest for your pattern. We price every plan at your actual monthly usage.
Some plans advertise a low average price that only applies if you use close to a set amount (often 1,000 kWh). Below that you miss the bill credit and pay more. We price these plans at your real usage and flag them, so the ranking reflects what you'd actually pay.
You can find your monthly usage on your electricity bill or by logging into your current provider's website. Many providers offer downloadable CSV files with your usage history. You can also check Smart Meter Texas (smartmetertexas.com) for detailed usage data if your meter supports it.
You can use our usage estimator tool, which generates a reasonable usage pattern based on your home size, type, and other factors. Click "Don't have usage data? Estimate it" on the main page to get started.
No, you can use the calculator without signing in. Your data will be stored in your browser's local storage. However, signing in with Google lets you save your usage data and current plan information to your account so it persists across devices and sessions.
Yes. If you use the calculator without signing in, your data stays in your browser and is never sent to our servers. If you sign in, your usage data and plan preferences are stored securely. We never sell your personal data, and we share it only with the service providers needed to run the service. Each one is named in our Privacy Policy, with what it receives.
TDU stands for Transmission and Distribution Utility. In Texas, TDUs own and maintain the power lines that deliver electricity to your home. Each TDU charges delivery fees that are included in your electricity rate. Your TDU is determined by your location, and selecting the correct one ensures accurate cost calculations.
Once you find a plan you like, you can enroll directly through PowerToChoose.org or the provider's website. Switching is generally straightforward in the deregulated Texas market. Your new provider handles the transition, and there's no interruption in service. Be sure to check for any early termination fees on your current plan before switching.
Prepaid plans need no deposit and no credit check, and they are marked with a Prepaid badge in your results; the "Prepaid / no credit check" filter shows only those. For regular plans the provider decides whether to ask for a deposit when you sign up, usually based on a credit check, and we don't have that information. Check the plan's Electricity Facts Label and the provider's sign-up page before you enroll.
Yes. ElectricityFinder runs an MCP server at https://electricityfinder.online/mcp that AI assistants can connect to, with no account and no key. In Claude, open Customize > Connectors, choose Add custom connector, and enter that address. It has three tools. compare_texas_electricity_plans ranks the plans at a ZIP code by projected yearly cost at the monthly kWh you give it, and returns a link that reopens the same comparison on this site. how_to_get_my_usage explains how to get your usage from Smart Meter Texas or your bills. send_feedback sends us a report, only when you ask it to. The assistant sends us only a ZIP code, kWh numbers and a contract length, never your conversation, and a comparison stores nothing about your home. Feedback reports are deleted after 30 days. The Privacy Policy has the details.
